The bike business is hard work
The summers are hot, the air is humid, and the days are long. So basically, the perfect time to be riding a bike on the beach! Thereās not much better than cruising down Hilton Head’s shoreline. A warm breeze at your back, collecting sunshine and sea shells. There’s nothing we’d rather be doing more than pedaling along side you. The reality is…. it’s your vacation! Ā And your vacation is our livelihood. Our goal is to make your vacation great, so youāll keep coming back.
Around 6am
The Squad gathers at homebase in Sea Pines Center. First, it’s a quick run to Plantation Station for energy drinks. Marie, aka Mom, usually opts for coffee next door at Cāest Bon. āSomething sweet, but not too sweetā is her usual. If itās Saturday, might as well double-up, its gonna be a long day!
“Please please pleaseee donāt ride your bikes in the saltwater. We know itās tempting. And it looks fun. Ā And it’s not your bike so āwho cares!ā The reality is…sandy, salty bikes are sad bikes. Sad bikes sit at the back of the wash line. And nobody wants to ride a sad bike on vacation.” -The Squad
Two groups make up our Core Squadron
That literally, make your wheels go-round. First group up, “The Flyers.” The Flyeās job is tough. Theyāre the ones soaring around the island with a truck load of bikes hanging off the side. Flyers are either scooping-up the bikes from the last weeks rental, or swooping-in for a delivery director to your vacation home. Our regular adult bikes weigh about 40 lbs, and on any given Saturday a Flyer can expect to slingĀ anywhere from 225-345 bikes…in a day!Ā So, if you see one of our Flyers on route make sure to give him a wave.
“If your vacation home has a hose weād love if youād give the olā 2-wheeler a little love. We canāt express enough how much we appreciate a clean bike before pick-up. We maintenance every bike when it returns, but in some cases if a bike is well maintained we can send it to the front of the wash line.” -The Squad
Then there’s “The Peddlers”
The Peddlers are part of the Core Team back at homebase in our store in Sea Pines Center. The Peddlers job has a lot of moving parts. If the Flyers are the “gears”;Ā Then, the Peddlers are the “grease” and a bike without grease is a sad bike. The Peddlers work together with the Flyers to offload trucks and sort the happy bikes (clean and ready-to-fly) from the sad bikes (salty and sandyā¦yuk!) Sad bikes usually need a wash, chain clean, chain grease, and either basic or advanced maintenance depending on how the bike āPeddlesā. Another part of the Peddler team workās with you, our Flock, answering phones or just helping you with a day rental around iconic Sea Pines Plantation.Ā
Fun Fact: Peddling Pelican pioneered how bikes are delivered on Hilton Head. We found by hanging the front tire off the side of the truck we can āscoopā and āswoopā twice as many bikes.
So there you have it.
We hope you have a better feel for who we are here at Peddling Pelican. Thanks for taking some time to get to know us. Feel free to stop in and say hello to the Squad. We’re located inside The Shops atĀ Sea Pines Center, at 71 Lighthouse Rd. Weāre the sweaty oneās loading bikes! Or email us at hello@peddlingpelican.com if youāre more of an emailār.
