The Bike Business Is Hard Work

The summers are hot, the air is humid, and the days are long. So basically, the perfect time to be riding a bike on the beach! There’s not much better than cruising down Hilton Head’s shoreline — a warm breeze at your back, collecting sunshine and seashells. There’s nothing we’d rather do than pedal alongside you. The reality is… it’s your vacation! And your vacation is our livelihood. Our goal is to make your vacation great, so you’ll keep coming back.

Around 6am

The Squad gathers at home base in Sea Pines Center. First stop? A quick run to Plantation Station for energy drinks. Marie, aka Mom, usually opts for coffee next door at C’est Bon. “Something sweet, but not too sweet,” is her usual order. If it’s Saturday, might as well double up — it’s going to be a long day!

“Please please pleaseee don’t ride your bikes in the saltwater. We know it’s tempting. And it looks fun. And it’s not your bike, so ‘who cares!’ But the reality is… sandy, salty bikes are sad bikes. Sad bikes sit at the back of the wash line. And nobody wants to ride a sad bike on vacation.” -The Squad

Two Groups Make Up Your Core Squadron

They literally make your wheels go round. First up: The Flyers. The Flyers’ job is tough. They’re the ones soaring around the island with a truckload of bikes hanging off the side. Flyers are either scooping up bikes from last week’s rental or swooping in for a delivery straight to your vacation home. Our regular adult bikes weigh about 40 lbs, and on any given Saturday, a Flyer can sling anywhere from 225–345 bikes in a single day! So if you see one of our Flyers en route, make sure to give them a wave.

“If your vacation home has a hose, we’d love it if you’d give the ol’ two-wheeler a little love. We can’t express how much we appreciate a clean bike before pickup. We service every bike when it returns, but in some cases, if a bike is well-maintained, we can send it to the front of the wash line.” -The Squad

Then There’s “The Peddlers”

The Peddlers are part of the Core Team at our Sea Pines Center home base. If the Flyers are the “gears,” the Peddlers are the “grease” — and a bike without grease is a sad bike. They offload trucks, sort happy bikes (clean and ready to fly) from sad bikes (salty and sandy… yuck!), and handle washes, chain cleans, fresh grease, and maintenance as needed. They also work directly with you — our Flock — answering phones and helping with day rentals around Sea Pines Plantation.

Fun Fact: Peddling Pelican pioneered how bikes are delivered on Hilton Head. We discovered that by hanging the front tire off the side of the truck we can “scoop” and “swoop” twice as many bikes.
